Time to Celebrate! Join JPUN Friday at Hotel VQ

Hello Everyone,

Jefferson Park United Neighbors would like to invite our friends to a celebration as a way to thank the 17 RNOs and City Council Representatives for their support and efforts in opposition of the stadium signage plan.

The event will take place high atop Hotel VQ on Friday, April 6 from 5:30pm-8:30pm. If you haven’t been there before the SkyBar Lounge offers breathtaking panoramic views of both downtown and the stadium.

Light appetizers will be complimentary along with drink specials from a cash bar and full menu. We are suggesting a small donation at the door to assist with costs incurred during the sign opposition project.

Please pass this invitation along to your membership via email, newsletter or general membership meeting. We look forward to seeing all of you, discussing how we can continue this momentum and work together in the future for the betterment of our neighborhoods and Denver.

Please join us on SUNDAY, MARCH 11th for “Mystery in the Art Gallery”, a kids’ and family show. We are doing this show as a fundraiser for a family with a heartbreaking, and heartwarming, story.

imageThree years ago, we performed one of our kids’ shows for a family, the Abrahamssons. They wanted a special celebration for their twins’ sixth birthday. The celebration was a big one, because doctors had warned the family that one of the twins, Maya, would probably not live to six years old. She had a large cancerous brain tumor on the brain, in a place from which it cannot be removed. Her father, Jim, came forward that day, and said he is an actor and improvisation artist. He has since become one of the major players at Adams Mystery Playhouse, and part of our “family” here.

The two girls, Maya and Leah, are now nine years old! It’s been an up-hill battle, including another scare last summer with the other twin, Leah. Doctors found a large tumor on Leah’s spine. It was removed and, thankfully, found to be benign.

Just two weeks ago, Maya and Leah’s mom went in to the doctor’s for some “female problems”. They ended up finding more than they thought they would. Sheila had breast cancer. They didn’t waste any time, due to the severity of it, and Sheila had a double mastectomy. The cancer has spread and she will undergo chemotherapy and radiation. The family now faces yet an additional challenge. And, the financial expenses are very high.

Through it all, the family has been strong, positive and fighting all the way – for years.

We are looking to you for help. Jim’s home theatre, Adams Mystery Playhouse, will put on one of their famous mysteries, but this time written by Leah and Maya (with a little bit of Dad’s help). This intriguing story, is set in an art gallery, when suddenly, a million dollar painting gets stolen! It is up to you to solve the crime. And, you will have an awesome lasagne lunch: 3-cheese lasagne w/meat sauce on the side; salad; rolls and butter; brownies; lemonade & coffee.

ALL PROCEEDS will go towards the Abrahamssons and the medical costs.

If you cannot attend the fundraiser, but would like to donate, please send your donation to:

Decatur-Federal Station Area Planning Meeting – Two Sessions on February 29th

The first public meeting about Decatur-Federal Station Area planning will take place Wednesday, February 29th (2:00-3:30pm or 5:30-7pm) at Fairview Elementary School in the gymnasium.  Fairview Elementary is located at 2715 W. 11th Avenue in the Sun Valley neighborhood, just south of Jefferson Park.

About the Project:

The City and County of Denver in partnership with the Denver Housing Authority is sponsoring a strategic transit-oriented development planning process for the Decatur-Federal station area. The federal agencies of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Department of Transportation (DOT) are jointly funding this planning effort through 2010 HUD Community Challenge and DOT TIGER II Planning grants.

The Plan process will focus on the one-half mile radius around the Decatur-Federal LRT Station located on RTD’s West Corridor in Denver’s Sun Valley neighborhood.

This neighborhood in particular must overcome numerous barriers to fully take advantage of the West Corridor public transit investment. The Station Area Plan and GDP will serve to provide valuable insight for stakeholders, the public and public agencies, and to attract future investment for underutilized land and a clear Master Plan for DHA’s Sun Valley Homes property.  With increased understanding of the infrastructure, risks, costs and opportunities associated with this station area, the plan will also serve to create a development vision for the planning area.
